Compact SUV: India's favourite segment
![]() |
Not long ago this segment wasn't even existing in India, but lately, it has become the best selling segment of India. So, what are the things that this segment provides which made it the best selling segment in such a short span of time?
The Ford Ecosport, which was introduced in India in the year 2013, kickstarted this segment which led the Automobile giants to really ponder upon the potential this segment holds in India. Following the Ford Ecosport, Maruti Suzuki came up with Vitara Brezza, Tata with Nexon, Mahindra with XUV 300, Hyundai with Venue, Honda with WRV and this segment is so successful that Kia, which has recently put its footsteps in India had to follow this trend to grasp the market and eventually came up with the Sonnet, Kia's compact SUV mainly built for the Indian market.
So, becoming a successful segment isn't easy. One has to present such a compelling package that suits most of the needs and tastes of the customer.
Starting with the quality of Indian roads, which is properly kept in mind while designing the cars of this segment, so that they skim the bumps, irregular patches, and potholes with ease. The impressive ground clearance of 190 - 200 mm provided by the segment's cars provides the customer with peace of mind and a smooth ride. Moreover, the limit of 4000 mm for the length of the car results in a compact design, with a shorter wheelbase to tackle our country's congested traffic and cramped streets. Large boot-space, ease of entry and exit of the car, and maneuverability can also be termed as the factors which make this segment so lovable.
Not to mention, the obsession of Indian's with big, heavy, and grand things, these compact SUVs provide a bold presence and an imposing personality. Also, the experience of sitting high in a vehicle turns out to be the cherry on the cake as their spacious and airy-feeling cabins are just opposite to the cramped cabins and low lying seats that hatchbacks and mid-size sedans provide.
Moreover, due to the fierce competition presented by other brands, we see a plethora of new and innovative features such as keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring system, remote engine, and A/C on/off, cabin air purifier just to name a few which makes the deal of this segment even dearer.
Last but not the least, the segment offers not just cars that are capable of a bit of off-roading, but also powerful and safer cars. Never before a segment has won the hearts of the Indian car buyer, but as stated above, the compelling offerings made by the segment attracts the customer to invest a little bit more from the hatchback or crossover segment to upgrade to the compact SUVs. Further, with the advent of more electric vehicles in this segment such as the Tata Nexon EV, we hope to witness even more models and variants, with even more innovative and futuristic technologies.
